R44 running Mogas
Been talking with an operator who runs R44 on Mogas, any idea if this is legal/safe.

Robinson R44 Approved Fuel Grades:
100ll grade aviation fuel
100/130 grade aviation fuel.
Unless the operator has maint dispensation from Robinson/CASA and adjusted maintenance inspections/schedules it's probably not the greatest idea to fly in it - It's not just the octane & burn temp, it's also the lead that is required to protect the engine.

Mogas STC for O-540 is available from Solar Aero, not suitable for IO-540 in the Raven II

Try this http://www.autofuelstc.com/
A lot of people out there have been doing it for a long long time and saving lots of $$ and think their machines run as good if not better.

In my opinion they run better on 98 premium.

Gents,
Our LAME told me that I can use 98 Unleaded (MOGAS ?) in our 44 RII's. But only in an emergency and add AVGAS ASAP afterwards. I think the lack of lead would be the issue, performance would be the same.

The STC used to come from Solar Aero but it is now Peterson Aviation. 1 tank of Avgas every 75 hours is enough to give the valves and seats the required amount of lead. STC is not available for Raven II.

We run 98 in our air tractor radial no problem but add a splash of valve saver with each fill

STCs are Ok - if ....... you do some research.
Depending on where a MOGAS STC originates can effect your engine.
Why?
Because the RON octane rating of Motor Car fuels in Australia can be different than the RON in other countries - ie - what we call 95 Octane ULP could well be 91 Octane elsewhere and.... Fuel lead content can vary due to regulations in other countries as well.

Re: R44 running Mogas
In Oz - The Rotax 912 and 914 run on 95ULP (no ethanol) or 100ll Avgas.
The engine is designed with valves and valve seats hardened etc for the ULP - as well, having water cooled cylinder heads the exhaust valves and seats are running cooler.
One reason for using leaded fuels is that it deposits on the valve face and seat to assist heat transfer away from the exhaust valve which is why hotter running air cooled engines need leaded fuel.
Which is why with any Rotax running on AVGAS, the engine oil and filter must be changed on schedule to rid the engine of any AVGAS lead deposits which accumalate due the lower temperatures whereas they are normally got rid of through the exhaust gasess on the much hotter running Lycoming air cooled engines.
I personally would not run a Lycoming on Oz ULP as it leaves too much to chance - ie - was I in a location where I could dilute occasionally with AVGAS to get the lead and "when exactly was it that I put AVGAS in Last". My opinion only - others will have more experience with long term effects (costs).

I must say that some of the fuel outlets even big name ones, give you the feeling that the fuel bought off them is a bit like making love by the seaside.

Meaning, in theory, it sounds great, but in practice, you end up with a sandy snatch??!!

It won't be too far off and there will be no AVGAS........so MOGAS will be the alternative or desiel.......

Sorry for dragging this old post up. But I have a couple questions. What is the current average price for 100 low lead in Australia and New Zealand, per liter?

Re: R44 running Mogas
Sorry, second question. What’s the price for premium mogas? I assume 98 octane.
I’m thinking of bring a continental 0-200 to Australia or New Zealand... but just want to know how much my bum is gonna hurt... today I bought 100LL for 2.75 USD per Gallon.
With the change in politics here I expect to be paying $5 USD by this time next year.

I recently paid AUD $2.05 per litre in Cessnock at the card bowser for 100LL.
