I think it’s pretty obvious, but it appears to be a very bad situation all round.

Probably explains the earlier "wow" remark. Most of us thought that early on.

Sadly, it doesnt get much sillier than that (flying at night with no IFR or NVFR qualifications).

Or the equipment installed in the aircraft to exercise those qualifications if they were held. Which they were not.


Crazy senseless deaths that were easily avoided by parking up at Coffs for the night. Let's hope lessons are learned.....

Concur with other posters.
Overwater at night without capability to go IFR is very risky.
Even in properly configured ACFT, the “black hole” is a very real thing.
