Postby Yankee » Tue Aug 14 2012, 22:27

Dear Slappers,
I've looked online, it appears that its possible to get a CASA medical while in the USA (and other countries)... has anyone ever done this? any advice or "GOTCHA's"?
Please help.

It's the same as getting it done in Australia, Doc does the medical, submits the papers etc, and you pay the fee.

If I'm flying overseas for a couple of years, and let my CASA medical lapse, when I return to Australia will I have more hoops to jump through or just a standard re-issue?

I don't feel like funding CASA for another few years if I'm not going to use their wonderful services.

To UnObvious,

Standard re-issue. Standard exam per age.

But, my thoughts are: If you are making decent money, overseas, chances are you will find a doctor overseas will charge you maybe half what they charge in Australia ($150, typical) + CASA filing fee. Why not renew it, as it comes due and be sure to renew it just before you return to Australia, this way you will be ready to go, when you return, one less thing to do and you will have saved money. I failed to take advantage of just such an opportunity, when I was in Hong Kong and had time available. Returned to Australia and my Medical cost me $476, with CASA filing fee, the most I have ever spent for a Medical, in 33 years.

That is my best advice . . . to keep others from repeating the mistakes I have made.

Hi there Yankee,

I'm a new guy on this forum and saw your message; wonder how you got on with the medical? I've been researching this and how to get my Aussie license converted from FAA. I'm an Aussie living in Texas and it's high time I went back home to Oz. I've been communicating with Dr. Bryman in Arizona and I'll probably go see him when I get off work later this month. Have you done the medical, and who did you see? Would you recommend the guy?

Cheers mate,

Mike
