He was forced to circle the airport for several hours to burn off fuel, but touched down without damaging the plane.

Without Damaging the Plane!!!!!, Oh Yeh? Just fit the wheel and off we go.

I may be wrong... But looks like the wing is touching the ground... I'm always suspicious of flying in a plane that has a wing on the ground...

I was in the air when he first contacted Melbourne centrewith his problem.. Centre created a temporary restricted zone around mangalore about 15 mile radius. Put out an all stations call for him and wished him luck.

Surprised he did not dead stick it in to save the engine but then again probably his pucker hole was probably well and truly clamped to the buttons of the seat to worry about it. Good effort though.

Turning the engine off on purpose eliminates any chance of a last minute go-around. It wasn't his plane, plus it is insured, so easy decision really.

For a 120 hours 21 years old Chinese student pilot, I think he did an excellent job. It will be an incident he will always remember. Someday, he will become a Captain and Instructor at China Southern Airlines. I am sure he celebrated his success with his classmates.

I had a similar experience in a Cessna 402B, when the Left Main Landing Gear would not give a "Down and Locked" green light.

It happened at night, over the mountains, and in a snowstorm, with a family on board.

To spare you the boring details, it worked out all right, in the end.

I recall it was caused by a Landing Gear Tensioner or the gear being "out of rig".
Never take "No" for an answer.

I'm sure while he was burning fuel he had a lot to think about,
the main thing is he got it down and walked away, probably a little shakily I'll bet..
Good job and a great outcome.
Well done..
Ensure brain is engaged before the rotor.

There is probably an engineer somewhere who owes him a beer! And the guy who signed the daily.
Not to point fingers, just a generous thing to do.
What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.
