Helicopter Landing Spots at Restaurants

Postby HeliKiwi500 » Mon Jun 24 2013, 03:21

Does anyone have any suggestions or know of various waterfront restaurants in the North Island, NZ who allow helicopters to land and drop passengers off? I know of a few down South, but have not heard of any up in the North Island.

Castaways in the west coast south west of Auckland used to allow flights in. I think they still do, but they like you to phone first to make sure you don't turn up in the middle of someone's wedding ceremony!

Mikano at Mechanics Bay. Are you a CPL? I don't think they allow a PPL to go in there, but could be wrong. Need prior permission to go in to NZMB, so Inflite/Helilink will be able to advise one way or the other when you ring them. I think the landing fee's $150+GST which might not excite you so much!

A few nice options on Waiheke too. Cable Bay is not strictly waterfront, but has great views over the water. The Waiheke restaurants are each only allowed a certain number of landings per month which they tend to keep for the commercial operators, but over winter some of them have enough landings for private flights too.

Carringtons at Karikari in the far north is amazing. Not strictly waterfront, but some spectacular scenery/flying enroute and in the immediate vicinity

I'm told that Earthsong Lodge on Great Barrier is great, but they might be tied in with a couple of commercial operators. Also not strictly waterfront, but great views of the Hauraki Gulf, and a wonderful flight

Hope this helps. I also hope some more North Islanders have some other ideas too!

Yep, turn NNW from Cape Reinga about 500 nm or there abouts, nice sandy beachs, pretty sure there is a few eateries there somewhere.
