Fire fighting rating

Postby UnObvious » Mon Nov 21 2016, 09:18

Anyone gone through the process without being grandfathered in?

I was told all I needed was a flight test due to my overseas experience, but CASA told me today that apparently now I have to also do the aerial application knowledge exam.

First I've heard of it.

Yep, gotta love it!

For anyone interested, they put out an instrument (91/16) in August detailing the flight training for the endorsement - https://www.casa.gov.au/files/casa16091pdf

I am in a similar position where i have done 250 hours on fires in NSW. Mine was all flown after the 1st September 2014 so can't apply for the Transition for Pilots Authorised to Conduct Firefighting. Has anyone in this situation been able to get the endorsement without having to do the 10 hours of flight training?

All my fire experience is overseas, some before Sept 2014.

I submitted certified copies of my logbook showing that experience as well as some copies of company training records, and they sent me a letter saying I only had to do an assessment flight and the flight test.

Roger Crosthwaite is the guy at CASA who is in charge of the firefighting rating so if you call CLARC maybe try and chat to him. Some of the others there just make it up as they go along.

Contact Mike or Fergus at Beckers
We can do it and test for it.
If you have previous experience we can do RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) but have to have a trail of how we assessed etc.
No theory aerial examination required for Fire Fighting endorsement but will require training and a test.

Most cases we find we have a lot of tidying up of licences to do under the new system prior.
Do you have a Low Level Rating?
Do you have Sling?
When is your FR LL due?? ever been done??
SEH FR and so it goes on and on.

Well How is this for CLARC and CASA and there bright system of the Pt 61 change over,

When issued with my Pt 61 licence they left off sling, I did not even notice this in the 10 pages of rubbish they send you they call a licence. Went to apply for my firefighting ratings for Aeroplane and Helicopter, I have Grade 1 ag in aerial application for both helicopter and aeroplane and have so since 2005 when changed over from NZ, I got issued with a fire fighting rating for aeroplane.
For the last 6 years I have also had an approval from CASA to train and issue sling endorsements, in which I had to do a flight test with a CASA ATO to get the approval,They even asked me in the last 12 months to tidy up a sling rating from a foreign licence to it would apply here in OZ, now they will not give me a firefighting rating for helicopter as I have no record of sling of low level training and issue even though when I changed licence over for NZ the ag rating took out the need for an issue of a low level rating and sling is included in the NZ CPL flight test.
Got told the 3000 hours sling and 1800 hours fire work and bombing, in my logbook does not count. Got told I have to go and do training and flight test for both.

Try and get a hold of Roger Crosthwaite, Skywork.

He's the CASA guy in charge of all this rubbish, maybe he can apply some common sense to the situation.

Myles Tomkins at Airwork is good at dealing with CASA too and can issue the firefighting rating.

Wow!!!

It’s very clear from an outsider that CASA clearly wants to completely destroy general aviation in Australia and thereby put themselves out of business.

Yes, they (CASA) are doing their best "at no cost to the industry" to strangle General Aviation BUT they will certainly not be putting THEMSELVES out of business.

Those that can do, those that can’t join CASA.
