Great work for uploading CY Heli.
Someone must have got a shot or two of the best dressed, or not so dressed.
Should be a big day for the gang tomorrow.
Good Luck guys and gals.

More than one good reason when exiting the Helicopter why NOT to walk to the rear.... unless you brought a snorlke as well.

Melbourne Olympic Park, where the journey begins...
Fashion on the Field. Yes there were some well dressed young ladies. A veritable flesh feast. But I'll let you imagine.
And my son (one of our loaders) having fun at the starting gates;

It’s always good if you can get the tail rotor where people can’t get at it.
A raised helipad (earthen mound, fabricated, “jetty”) can often put the tail out of reach – well worth considering if setting up a regular spot, especially if the passengers have potentially been drinking.

CYHeli. PHS had the job for the racing. What happened with them?
Dont question, just accept, it's easier
The harder you work at it the harder it is to give up.
If it is to be it is up to me.
You attract what you are.
To question is to grow.
If you create a shadow, look at yourself.

BS, I drove JRE on the Saturday and BLN on Cup Day. Yesterday I loaded. Share the love...
The actual HLS...
As you can see the paths keep the punters safe and act as a guide.
The re-fueling area was on the mound that kept punters away from the tail;
Some tarts and a pilot.
PHS hasn't had the contract for some time. Here's to next year.

Re: Melbourne Cup Helicopters
Hey CYHeli,
I used to venture out to FGN for Cup Day during the PHS years until the VRC banned helicopters in 19??..for flying over the stables.
Mainly chasing JetRangers..of course..but would snap anything that rattled past.
I see the choppers are 'back' to a degree down near the river ,as your pics show.
Can the public (or a heli-nut with a camera) get close to the area for the purposes of
recording a bit of rotary wing history.?? Hope to get down there this year if It's going to be worth it.

Hey Junkie,
Not with HeliServ anymore, but the public that are inside the event can get close enough to get photos, just see Ed Chisholms stuff in the link above. I'm not sure where they are leaving from this year, last year they stopped using Melbourne Olympic Park and had a new venue.
It's a fun day, just make sure that you watch the power when climbing out of confined areas and be on the right freq. simple really.
Watch the web sites for later in the year. http://www.melbournecuphelicopters.com.au or http://www.heli-serv.com
Great bunch.

Lot more to it than 'flying over the stables'!
We originally flew into the training track way over in the SSW part of Flemington, taking off close to the HT power lines and manoeuvring around and away. With increasing flights (mid/late '80s) came ATC in their portable tower, paid for by the VRC, who worked in with the lights above the stands to assert some control. Early 90s we moved over to the east end of the course as the proximity to the power lines was realistically unsafe, but flight paths were negotiated to keep clear of the stables.
A new Chairman of the VRC began to have perceived issues with our flight paths, culminating in an alcohol related exchange of views with the tower, who repeatedly assured him that no flights were anywhere near the stables. The following year we were banned. Good times were 80s to mid 90s, lots of money to be made, lots of short skirts, and generally lunchtime spent with free access to corporate hospitality. Always a harder job flying the pax out, as many were a tad emotional, none were ever on time, and many random tossers would turn up willing to pay way, way over the odds to buy a seat Like many things it lost an edge such that we eventually piled everyone into a couple of machines and went home to BBQ and TV until it was time to go back in and start again....
